Add a sprinkling of well observed observations of living your life through an insta lens and the notoriety of being a fax celeb, as well as the pressure it puts on your mental health. As a devoted listener of the Creep Dive/Hive and a huge fan of White’s work in general, I gather there are elements to the story that must be autobiographical. This book has heart, soul, and insight, weaving themes of mental illness, friendship, and the strange liminality that is your late 20s/early thirties seamlessly.

Paranoid that a side conversation is happening without her, Claire becomes slightly obsessed with making her voice heard again. We get fully absorbed in their life, their thoughts, their feelings and we quickly feel passionately happy, sad and outraged on their behalf. Finally, the meat of the book: the sections that brought My Hot Friend from a 4 to a 5 star read for me. There are no words to describe how much I loved this book so I won't even try too much 😂 I've always loved Sophie's writing but this is by far my favourite.

It is an ultimately hopeful book about living with - not being cured of - a brain that is a bit tricksy. Like her last contemporary novel, The Snag List, it's a deep dive into the inner lives of millenial women: this time, White takes a look at what it means to try and build and maintain friendships when 30 is rapidly approaching and people's lives are undergoing profound change. The second half largely focuses on illness and I did like the way it was dealt with - I felt it was very real and showed how illness is dealt with both from an individual’s perspective and from her friends and family. Overall I enjoyed the touch influencers, podcasts and social media how it can be all glamorous and consuming while also being quite toxic. With these three characters, Sophie White depicts modern life with many of its damaging and complex layers. The novel is as insightful and candid as the author herself when addressing difficult subject matter with a trademark Irish wit.

a darkly funny, raw story about friendship, vulnerability and honesty' Irish TimesLexi is on top of the worldThe podcast she co-hosts with her ride-or-die bestie is going stratospheric. I’m a first time mother myself and have been so disappointed with some of my friendships since entering this new phase so was probably looking for something I could relate to. I have been that person struggling with repetitive note making and worrying about WhatsApp groups and friends. Lexi’s successful podcast is shared with her best friend and boyfriend, and they’re about to sign a deal which will earn them megabucks, but it’s achingly clear neither have her best interests at heart.Joanne’s friends and partner don’t understand how hard it is being a new mum; both expect her to snap back into her old way of life and be up for going ‘out out’ on a whim.
