The flour test is just as problematic for some vacuums, but the Hoover HF500 performed well here, too. On hard floors, it collected 98% of the flour I spilled in a single pass, leaving only a very light but still visible dusting behind. The pets model comes with an extra attachment: a smaller turbo brush for more intense vacuuming and hair removal. This doesn’t have the anti-twist feature though so will need more regular cleaning.

Take the Cheerios on hard floor test out of the equation, however, and the rest of the results are technically perfect. There were some elements left behind on a single pass, but not enough to register more than 1g of weight on my kitchen scales. Throughout I've been comparing the Hoover HF9 to the Shark Stratos, as I think these two vacuums are close competitors. While I would say that the performance of the Shark Stratos may slightly tip the scales, the affordability and lightweight design of the HF9 makes it an option that I would tell anyone on a budget to go for, especially if you can find it at a discounted price. Emptying the collection bin is straightforward, too. It’s positioned to the side of the extension wand, so can be removed without having to take off any attachments. It unclips with a button at the top, while a second button at the bottom releases the door and lets the dust, dirt and debris fall out. I’m happy to say that the Hoover HF500Anti-Twist dealt with all the above incredibly well. It felt light and flexible to hold and it maneuvered around furniture (and children) with ease. The small head and flexible joints meant that it could slip under things really well.As you can see from the chart below, the Hoover HF500 more or less holds its own in terms of suction power. However, it’s worth noting that the vacuum only has two power settings, where some rivals have three. For example, the Shark IZ300UKT has a standard power setting whose suction sits between its weakest and most powerful settings, designed for everyday cleaning. The HF500 has only standard and Turbo modes, so its standard suction is only a little better than the Shark model’s lightest, most economical setting. On furniture (I particularly like using the dusting tool for our velvet headrest that seems to accumulate so much dust!)

In terms of size, the device is fairly standard, standing upright at 260 x 210 x 1,110mm (WDH). It weighs 3.4kg: the handheld unit is around 2kg, with the floor head and wand making up the remainder. The HF500 Anti-Twist offers our most powerful cordless cleaning, thanks to a new and improved motor. Just like the previous model, the HF500 PLUS can be used upright or as a handheld device which is perfect for families like ours who are constantly having to clean up all the crumbs the kids drop over the dining table, sofas, carpets and rugs! The side-loading of the suction pipe has its pros and cons. Yes, you can empty it without removing attachments, but it means fluff and dirt needs to pass through a tight u-bend as it transitions from the upward pipe to the bottom of the collection bin.

Out of the box

Starting with the Cheerios, the HF500 performed well. There are vents at the front of the floor head – gaps that can draw in and swallow larger items, such as chunky breakfast cereal. This Hoover is so light! Once I had put it together I was so surprised, this is the most lightweight vacuum I have ever used. We live in a three storey house and it’s no fun lugging a heavy vacuum up two flights of stairs so this is brilliant for us. It’s compact size also makes storing it easy too. It stands upright on it’s own, you can make it shorter to go in a cupboard or it also comes with a wall mount so you can hang it up. How does it work? The “Direct Impulse Motor” spins at 100,000 rpm and delivers 75AW (whatever that means). In practise the Hoover HF500 Anti-Twist is easy to use and I have been happy using it as my only vacuum cleaner since receiving it. I get carpet lines which suggests it has a good suction and the carpet and floors look free of dust and debris after use. With a large LED light strip on the front and compact parking position this vacuum has all the features you need including a 2in1 furniture and dusting tool along with a mini power nozzle which is ideal for pet owners when cleaning upholstery.

Dust and dirt gathers in all areas of the home – especially in those hard to reach places. Thanks to the wide range of accessories that come with the H-FREE 500, you can get the job done with minimal effort! If you want the convenience and portability of a vacuum without sacrificing suction power, choose the Hoover-HF500STH. Whether you have a big house, (or need a really deep clean) you don't need to worry about the battery running out of power, as this vacuum boasts an impressive 45-minute run time There is a light which flashes red when battery power is below 10%, but I have found that I can still use it for some time after this light comes on, especially if I switch to less energy intensive options (eg not using turbo or turning the brush rotation off). You can charge the battery in the vacuum or separately and it fully charges in 2.5 hours giving a run time of up to 45 minutes. Emptying The Dust Container

I loved the previous model of this Hoover and I am pleased to say that this version is even better! The HF500 boasts a number of features that sets it apart from other cordless vacuums on the market. It’s extremely lightweight and compact The vacuum's floor head will always work efficiently even when dealing with long hairs in the carpet due to its Anti-Twist floorhead. This design stops hairs getting tangled up in the head. Thus, inhibiting its performance The other option for emptying all the dust out is to take the dust container off the motorised part. You then need to remove the filters before tipping the dust into the bin, but you can get a much better clean this way. All of these parts can be washed to get them really clean too, but make sure they are completely dry before reassembling to the motorised parts. Storage Hook
