I thought this one was an improvement on the last which I didn’t really enjoy (the only one I wasn’t keen on). two plot lines ran side by side - one was brilliant and very reminiscent of Agatha Christie set against the Bamburgh backdrop.

DCI Ryan voices what everyone is thinking “The man’s got all the charm and personality of a rainbow trout. An enjoyably light murder mystery with likeable characters and an atmospheric setting, Bamburgh is a fast-paced whodunnit strengthened by strong police procedural and lots of humorous dialogue. I absolutely loved the banter between Ryan and Phillips, and really enjoyed the way that Ryan supported the rest of his team and how they all came together to get this mystery solved.

But 18 books later, Ryan and Anna's relationship is still going strong and I began to enjoy their chemistry much more easily. The culprit of the cold case murder is revealed early on and is not suspected by “his fellow workers” till very near the end. The crime and investigation didn't grip me at first, but what held my attention was the fantastic characters.

While I enjoyed Holy Island, I wasn't sure how I felt about the romance aspect of the story as I thought it felt a little abrupt.

Optional extra – have your items hand wrapped in brown paper packaging tied up with string and with their very own North East tourist tip. There is a DNA match found for the murderer linking him to a very recent abduction and failed murder attempt so Mel is desperate to be involved and find her sisters killer. The plots are solid, the countryside and other settings beautifully drawn and the characters – well, they’re what really make this series sing. This time the reader was well aware of who the murderer was which put a different slant on the story. I kept thinking that the odds were astronomical that this one police station in all of England had three corrupt psychopaths as the DCS. The ending is dramatic and there is always the thought that she may not be able to avenge her sister but could end up dead herself.
