The Beyerdynamic are better built, deliver audio more consistently across different re-seats, have a more neutral sound profile, which some users may prefer, and their passive soundstage is more immersive. Typical for a dynamic headphone from the nineties, the driver will distort once it goes into high excursion due to low frequency content or high SPL. It also has the added benefit of not trapping in heat as badly as the aforementioned alternative does. The DT 770 Pro 32 Ohm comes with leatherette earpads, as well an adjustable padded headband for maximum comfort making them ideal for long sessions.

png Monitoring and recording in the studio ✓ Closed-back (The earcup housings are completely closed so incoming and outgoing noise is attenuated. While it won’t knock your socks off, the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO blocks outside noise from reaching your ear fairly well, though it’s mostly sound that’s higher-pitched than middle-C.However, the Edition models have a slightly softer contact pressure for comfortable music enjoyment at home, while the Pro headphones sit a little tighter on the head to stay in place even during faster movements in everyday studio use. The Amplifier/DACs used in this review were the SPL Phonitor XE (with built-in DAC), Benchmark HPA4 + Burson Composer 3X Performance DAC, Grace Design SDAC + A90 , and the JDS Labs Element II connected via USB to my desktop computer. These open backed headphones with circumaural ear pads have a lightweight diaphragm for improved performance. This manufacturer has developed a reputation for producing headphones with solid imaging performance, and the Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO are no exception.

If you’re worried about comfort, there’s no need; you can use this for hours without anything feeling off. Those who prefer a wider, more expansive soundstage with a more comfortable fit and don't care about leaked audio will want to try the open-back Beyerdynamic DT 880 and Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO. Sure, those too are long in the tooth and yes: they’ve got a lot of the same drawbacks as the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80Ω, but they’re time-tested and industry standard for the same reasons the Beyerdynamic cans have stuck around so long.

This combination of great construction, comfort, and closed-back design means they're an industry-standard model found in recording studios worldwide. We don’t do any stress tests and very few models are used for longer than a couple of days, so this is a fairly subjective score. A lightweight, open-ear design, circumaural headphone with folding headband and 90 degree, swivelling ear-cups. Even though the construction is sturdy and the headband feels like it could last a good few years of extensive use, the overall feel is slightly on the cheaper side due to the use of brutal-looking plastic for the ear-cups and headband adjustment mechanism. This distortion dips below 1% only at around 105 Hz (when measured at high output levels), and throughout all of this, a nasty 3rd harmonic is very present from 60 Hz to 100 Hz so, when doing anything low-end critical, be careful as this is also present without calibration applied!
