Question 7 | Richard Flanagan (3) – This Reading Life on Monday musings on Australian literature: The stories we want or, is it, need?

This was only our second waltz, but I’m going to leave plenty of room on the dance card for his name. They fall into friendship and, for the rest of their lives, through ups and downs, remain deeply bonded. An aspect of Charity’s personality is even referred to, during a multi-day hike the foursome take while in Vermont years later, as the “serpent in paradise. Every story is told from someone’s perspective, Larry seems to be saying, don’t trust this to be the only version.Yes it is,” I smile before adding while you walk out the door, “Just don’t forget you said you were alright with a broken heart.

Their struggles are the stuff of our everyday existence, but no less important or significant as a result. considered by many to be an American classic, I thought it would be a great addition to my "Classics Month"! And so, when someone suggested my reading group do his last novel, Crossing to safety, I jumped at the chance. As well as showing us the value of deep friendship, Crossing to Safety explores how these four friends cope with the challenges and setbacks that confront them during their lives. In Crossing to Safety, Stegner explores the mysteries of friendship, and it extends Stegner's distinguished body of work that had already earned him a Pulitzer Prize (for 1971's Angle of Repose) [2] and the National Book Award (for 1976's The Spectator Bird).

Rather four stars for a beautifully crafted, comfortable book about the lives of four interesting characters. As they grow older, they confront the sudden turns and dead ends that inevitably litter the road of life. She’s desperate for Sid to succeed, to secure tenure at Wisconsin, and her heart is set on building a future for their family. Her hair was drawn back in a bun, as if to clear her face for expression, and everything in the face smiled—lips, teeth, cheeks, eyes.

There's no evident warmth in her relationship with her children, we don't see her with them, although having a large family is one of the things she says as a young wife that is most important to her. The four of them meet in their twenties, become fast friends, though from very different backgrounds, and bump up against each other on and off for the rest of their lives.I’ve never had the experience of a “couples” friendship like this, setting out on vacations with one another, bonding over shared pregnancies, or struggling with end of life together.
