The enamel pin is still clipped to the front cover of Furfur; the pages have a slight indent where the pin has been pressed into the book over the years. This newly expanded edition of England's Hidden Reverse, the classic exploration of the English esoteric musical underground that includes the first, and only, biographies of Coil, Current 93, and Nurse With Wound, is based on exclusive interviews and unprecedented access to all three bands' personal archives.

Since then, I’ve also enjoyed his novel Xstabeth and his chapbook To Run Wild With It: A Handbook of Autonomic Tarot (a collaboration with the artist Sophy Hollington. Besides the meticulously-considered exploration of the work of three artists, the other main draw here is the way that Keenan uses that exploration to venture into explorations of art, literature, film, music, and magic. An expanded edition of the classic exploration of the English esoteric musical underground—with the first biography of Coil, Current 93, and Nurse With Wound. This book reminds of two other fascinating music books that I would also recommend: John Higgs The KLF: Chaos, Magic and the Band Who Burned a Million Pounds", which much like England's Hidden Reverse, uses the framework of a band biography to elucidate the band's influences, and the larger scene; and Simon Ford's Wreckers of Civilisation: The Story of COUM Transmissions and Throbbing Gristle which, dealing as it does with TG, is the perfect counterpart to this book (and much like this book's first edition, is now woefully out of print - perhaps if EHR is a success, Strange Attractor Press might consider reprinting Wreckers? One from a limited edition of 1000 copies of the Hardback Special Edition, including the Furfur volume with pin. Coil had successfully rebirthed themselves into their lunar phase, opening themselves up to everything they were closed off to before to create two of their masterpieces, the Moon’s Milk EPs (1998-9) andboth volumes of Musick To Play In The Dark (1999-2000) .

Keenan does his best to make most Current 93 releases sound like essential listening, but perhaps I'm missing something in the music. Because I’m a weirdo, my last few years of high school were soundtracked by Coil, C933, NWW and Throbbing Gristle. Where Keenan shines, and where he most clearly prefigures his work as a novelist – aside from This Is Memorial Device’s amusingly snarky use of music taste to tell the reader something about the characters – is in his argument that Coil, Current 93 and Nurse With Wound sit at the heart of this hidden reverse of English culture. Fast forward to the present day, and I'm reading an interview with a band in a music magazine, and they mentioned being influenced by Coil, one of my favorites among the WSD crowd, and they also mentioned a book about Coil and other bands: England's Hidden Reverse.

Long out of print and with the first edition demanding serious money from collectors, this much-anticipated expanded edition comes completely redesigned, with many new and previously unseen photographs and ephemera.
