When it is not engaging however, it is not so because bad narration but because the subject becomes so brutal and horrifying. Ebooks fulfilled through Glose cannot be printed, downloaded as PDF, or read in other digital readers (like Kindle or Nook).

Because, they could’ve simply left the country without forming a proper assembly or a constitution, leaving behind all their responsibility to the newly formed nations but they didn’t do so and I completely admire Britishers for it. In this superb reconstruction, Collins and Lapierre recount the eclipse of the fabled British Raj and examine the roles enacted by, among others, Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Mountbatten in its violent transformation into the new India and Pakistan. Even though I have some difference with the ideology of Gandhi, one cannot deny his efficiency in bringing out the peace at worst of situations.

Regarding partition, the book—providing maps of Punjab, Bengal, and Kashmir—relates that the crucial maps setting the boundary separating India and Pakistan were drawn that year by Cyril Radcliffe, who had not visited India before being appointed as the chairman of the Boundary Commission. They have had the greatest cooperation from the personal records of one of the few major survivors of that time. Although most may know that the partition caused obscene and bloody massacres between Hindus, Moslems and Sikhs, the ferocity is beyond imagination. Also covered in detail are the events leading to the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, as well as the life and motives of Jawaharlal Nehru and Muhammad Ali Jinnah. At the age of thirteen, he travelled to America with his father who was a diplomat (Consul General of France).

I can't give it more than a star and my sentimental associations with the book prevent me from shelving it as disappointing, waste of time or should never have been written as it deserves. How Mountbatten have been appointed, the British Politics, all these kind of inside information about the crown made it easier to understand their mentality and the things that they were going through during the Independence. The subtitle alone makes it difficult for me to rate this book as more then one star but what you must understand is that this book was in no small part the last and greatest of Lord Louis Mountbatten's monuments to his tireless self promotion. I would say this book is a must-read for someone who wants to know about the events around the Partition; a reign that ruled India for decades and whose policies and governance can still be seen in our very country. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award in the 2008 Republic Day honours list.It was a carefully elaborated christening present from Mountbatten and his staff to the Indian leaders, a guide to the awesome task that now lay before them.

Today Nehru's daughter, Indira Gandhi, has inherited that great office, Prime Minister of what was once the vastest democracy on earth. In a nutshell, British Raj in India can be described as history's most grandiose accomplishment that had the most banal of origins. This book solely focuses on the transfer of power from the British Empire to the Indians and the by product of Independence – The Painful Partition. With a heritage stretching back nearly 200 years, HarperCollins is one of the world's foremost English-language publishers, offering the best quality content right across the spectrum, from cutting-edge contemporary fiction to digital hymnbooks and pretty much everything in between.

There is also a very horrifying and realistic account of the tragedy of partition and its bloody aftermath. He developed interests in travelling, writing and cars and later traveled across the United States as a young man. The narrative style of the book immerses readers in the visual landscape of the falling Raj and allows them to step into the minds of the great actors of this time. Cruelty and dimension; a land of past accomplishment and present concern, whose future was compromised by problems more taxing than those confronting any other assembly of humans on earth.
