I’m feeling the beat when I’m writing those stories and the voices are going along to that beat, they’re kinda rappin’ along. The image is colour corrected to attain the closest possible match to the original work if required. What unites the two, of course, is that grinding insistence on being realistic, getting your head down – in other words, giving up. Your heart may be broken a million times, your spirit may die a billion times, but your art can help and keep you going.

The art is wonderful, the story doesn’t let you down, and we get a glimpse into a city and world that’s different from many American cities but also very similar in many ways, which makes it interesting to see how it’s viewed by people who know it well. Over the next weeks, he begins creating a mural on the wall, one that chronicles the lives of his a local low-level fixer named Jay who harbours dreams of being a rapper. His work leaps to match RK’s loose work consistently, providing a vision of Mumbai that feels just right for the book. It’s where imagination and creation are possible, despite how bad it gets, no matter how much it hurts. A graffiti on wall, perhaps, is just a way to make other people’s lives a bit better, and it’s all for free. There’s an unrestrained purity here, but doesn’t mean it’s impenetrable — it’s just real and honest and proud to be so, in a way so many things rarely are.

Still giving the book 4 stars because it’s a real masterwork and clearly a lot of love went into it, including the many specific details about life in Mumbai. I found myself rooting for the protagonists while at the same time struggling with the messy artwork and somewhat boring plot. So all of these things, it’s always been in my head, I’m always listening to music when I’m writing. It’s a book about what it feels like to dream, the grace and beauty of dreams, and how they shape us and drive us.It was helpful in that there were all these different views of the city and what the best way to move above it were (in terms of trying to get out of the slum). If Miller’s iconic 16-panel grid is cinematic comics, Grafity’s coming at the whole enterprise totally differently. Ram wants to give us an idea about what’s going on with these young people and how the world has shaped them, lifted them up, or let them down. You could understand what just happened by the time you read the third panel in the tier below, but there isn’t that pure clarity, nothing to delineate “this is what happened” in that second beat. The outer cosmos of tens of millions of people who try to survive in this anthill is counterbalanced by those moments of self-exile our characters go through as they find peace from chaos when they can finally be in front of a wall.
