I thought these comments were a good thing, and seeing as I never heard these words used to describe my two older brothers, they built up my confidence. Back home, Dad tried his best to stay awake at the dinner table while talking to my brothers about football or hockey. And he tells the story of meeting his boyfriend, whom he would marry and who would eventually become a major Democratic leader. A tense and twisting family drama, There's Something I Have To Tell You unfolds through the eyes of the Kennedy family and the great many secrets they have kept from one another when a farm accident forces each to create new lies to cover old ones. He felt different from his father and brothers, who loved to hunt and go camping, and out of place in the rural, conservative small town where he lived.

But authors need to realise that most middle-aged women are far too exhausted to cope with a job, a husband *and* a boyfriend! And leave out the middle-aged adultery plotline… most middle-aged women are far too tired to cope with a husband *and* a lover! This came to my attention when my oldest brother zoomed into camp on a four-wheeler and jumped off so fast that the ATV kept rolling for a few more yards. We were a competitive family, and putting my best foot forward, both to win and to impress my parents, was always the name of the game.Chasten Buttigieg is a transformative political spouse, just as his husband was a transformative candidate. The door to the slurry pit is open and Jimmy has dementia, has he accidentally fallen in, and where is Ursula. It felt as if growing up somewhere like Northern Michigan meant it was impossible that I could be gay—gay people weren’t found in places like that! To be fair, the book is in no way graphic and we are rarely taken inside any of the well-used bedrooms, but, oh boy, even when Jay’s not actually doing sex, she spends an awful lot of time thinking about it.

I’ve never met another Chasten, but when I was younger, my name was just another thing that made me stick out.In the years after I finished college, when I had to pay for something I didn’t quite have the money for, I sometimes thought about the moments when Mom was stressed about money and how she made it all add up.

Chasten speaks to his readers as a trusted friend, reminding anyone who feels ‘different’ that they are not alone, and that learning to love and embrace what makes us different may be the greatest gift we can give ourselves. Had the book been cut by about 150-200 pages to remove most of the relationship nonsense it could have been excellent and, without getting into spoiler territory, it would have meant the solution could have been presented in a much more tense and surprising way.I was really pleased with what this said about my fishing skills, though of course I never would have said that out loud. The backyard we grew up playing in has since been turned into Dad’s large garden, where he grows his own vegetables that always find their way into Mom’s signature salsa.

There's a lot of secrets, twists and the author did an excellent job in delivering a story that works on classic domestic thriller tropes but it's also very original at the same time. As I was reading this book, I couldn’t help but think, ‘I wish I had had THIS when I was growing up!Even though I saw a few gay characters on television, gayness was something distant, almost like a luxury or a privilege.
