However, this can only be done if one has a board by him following every move in the book [ you can but a small pocket size magnet set for cheap ] . Experiencing openings and positions in the heat of battle is far more illustrative in play than theory. As a result, the games are absorbing and the lessons learned (at least in my case) tend to stick with the player.

If one might wonder if this book is difficult to read, one does not need to worry since this book is simply written and is packed with information that in a short time one will see by how he plays others that he has improved quickly. Unfortunately I didn't spot this, not starting to read the book until more than 60 days from puchasing si unable to request refund from vendor. I started doing the things he said, particularly the things he said over and over, and I started winning games. Chernev is wrong in his analysis of Black's move 8, in Game 1, von Scheve - Teichmann, Berlin 1907, Giuoco Piano. The content in this book - the descriptions, the explanations, the way the passion of the author is exciting to read and demonstrated with each move - is fantastic. I knew this heuristic, but after seeing it in action several times I feel I understand a little better. In his kingside attack section, which features some nice games the 'culprit', and eventual loser, often moves his rook's pawn forward a square.

When you "look inside" a book and see algebraic notation, what you expect is to get a book with algebraic notation. The players you will encounter are Capablanca, Tarrasch, and Rubinstein rather than Karpov, Kasparov, and Kramnik. Chernev was extremely well-read in chess literature, and shares insights of many grandmasters, as these insights are illustrated in the games in this book.

The only downside to this book is that nearly every game ends in a tactical checkmate with many pieces still on the board. I am learning a lot from this book and it really has increased my joy and skill of the game - even though I have just been beaten soundly by a 12-year-old boy. Sicilian defense (answering E4 with C5 offers counterattacking play especially on opponent too hellbent on kingside attack). This book purposely repeats the analysis and rationale over and over (phrased slightly differently each time) to drill the concept into the reader’s mind.
