Mike shares many of his own mixing tips, supplemented by tips and advice from some of the industry's top engineers that range from Chris and Tom Lord Alge to Andy Wallace. The 340‑page book contains 20 chapters grouped into four main sections covering hearing and listening, mix preparation, balancing, and sweetening. If you've been figuring out everything yourself or piecing together your workflow based on internet forum posts, this book may bump your work forward by months or years. I've heard it's also good for experienced mixers who are seeking to develop their skills, but I can't talk for that as I am not one of them!

The main meat of the book is contained in Part 3, where eight chapters cover the nitty‑gritty of compression, equalisation, side‑chains and the fundamental art of balancing. Another important detail is that it never appears to be trying to sell you one brand or product, it really makes you feel that the only important thing is knowledge and experience. He was the young "balance engineer" for The Beatles on Revolver through Abbey Road, with a spell off for later White Album and Let It Be.After starting to dabble in doing some home recordings and simple mixes, I skimmed this book over a period of several months. So while I didn't need to learn how a compressor works, I enjoyed this book and took good things away from it.

stars because it's out of date and could be refreshed and it's also really only focused on mainstream and pop mixes. Recently, I felt like my mixing had hit a plateau, so I went looking for new ideas to consider at mix time.Essential pre‑mix groundwork is covered in three chapters through Part 2, dealing with timing, tuning and arrangement issues. He includes quotes from many heavy-weight producers and engineers, and also mentions songs which demonstrate the techniques he's discussed. The final section comprises five chapters dealing with mix sweetening techniques, including the application of reverbs and delays, stereo processing and other effects, bus compression, and the use of mix automation. User-friendly explanations introduce technical concepts on a strictly need-to-know basis, while chapter summaries and assignments are perfect for school and college use.

This book aims to demystify the mixdown stage by structuring it into a clear step-by-step progression.

The book is interspersed with humor, which helps to mellow out the otherwise heady engineering lingo. The previously mentioned book, as well as “Mix Smart” and “Using Your Portable Studio” all have that kind of info in them. Sound On Sound magazine’s mix specialist Mike Senior shows you how to achieve release-quality mixes even in the smallest studios, by applying power-user techniques from the world’s most successful producers. This is a good solid book to help a budding audio engineer understand the concepts (and some of the tricks) of mixing music.
