Additionally, the Frisby family name was changed to "Brisby" to avoid trademark infringement with the Frisbee. If you are looking for a specific brand of children’s book that is simultaneously wholesome, while containing legitimate sci-fi horror elements, then look no further than Mrs. A culture of fear began to grow surrounding unethical medical and scientific practices, which are heavily reflected in the book.

Frisby and the Rats of NIMH has received widespread praise from scholars, critics of children's literature, and children themselves. But they have to move because the field will be plowed soon and if they stay they will all likely die.

For me the whole story is entertaining whilst being an insight into an aspect of life that we, as humans, seem to have forgotten. Out of respect for Jonathan, the rats agree to move Frisby's house to a location safe from the plow. I think it was my second-grade teacher who read this to us in class, like a chapter a day, or something.

It helps that I am a devoted rat-dad, but I'd recommend it even for those who still harbor prejudices against these noble creatures.

He listened intently to chapters at bedtime, engaged with all the animal characters and wanted to talk about them and even act out some of the exciting bits. The character of Jenner is made a villain who is still present with the rats, rather than having left them before the story begins. She's an adult, which is not common to children's novels; usually the protagonist is the same age or a couple years older than the intended audience.

In a paper titled "The Critical Reader in Children's Metafiction", literary scholar Joe Sanders wrote that the book's emphasis on the rats' abilities to read mirrors the "growing reading abilities of the novel's own target audience".I must confess I still pick it up every decade or so and read it again, for the sheer pleasure in such a simple but compelling story. Frisby just happens to hear the humans talking about drastic things they were going to do and when they were going to do them. Surprisingly thoughtful book about education, ethics, community and obligations to ourselves, our family, our tribe, and the larger world. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH won numerous awards including the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, Newbery Medal, and the runner-up National Book Award in 1972; the Mark Twain Award in 1973; the Pacific Northwest Library Association Young Readers' Choice Award and the William Allan White Children's Book Award in 1974.
